Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
A Diesel Particulate Filter or DPF is a component which can be found in almost all modern diesel engines and is used to remove the harmful soot from the exhaust gas which the engine produces.
The DPF works by catching the soot inside the filter so it is not released into the atmosphere, but, as with any filter it needs to be emptied regularly. The process for emptying the filter is called regeneration and happens at higher speeds, usually on the motorway, when the exhaust temperature is high enough.
Because not everyone with a diesel engine does regular motorway driving it is very easy for their Diesel Particulate Filter to become blocked and in some cases will cause the car to go into limp mode.
When a car comes into us with problems caused by a DPF blockage there are a few options available to cure the problem.
- We can sometimes force regeneration of the DPF using diagnostics equipment which involves driving the car in a high rev range to get the exhaust at the required heat range to burn off the soot.
- We can replace the DPF and associated pipework if the DPF is blocked to the point it can no longer be regenerated. Main dealer prices for installing a new DPF will usually start at approx £1500, our prices start from £350.
- At the customer’s request we can remove the filter from the exhaust with prices starting from £395. This option will require an ECU remap which is included in the price and you have the option of a performance or economy remap.
